Payment methods
In Hob, participants pay the club’s charges — enrolments, season fees, membership fees, and other priced items — using reference numbers. Payment collection is not a separate hobby module; it is a shared way to collect payments in your Hob environment once payment collection is enabled.
This page describes which payment methods you can offer participants and what information you need to enable each one in the dashboard (Payment types).
Before you enable payment methods
- Payment collection is a paid add-on for your Hob environment. Core module workflows are free; add-on billing still comes from paid participations and other paid objects — not a flat monthly subscription. See pricing.
- Your Hob environment must have payment collection enabled (the
paymentsextra) so payment types, saldos, and reference numbers work. - In the dashboard, open Payment types (permission to manage payment types). Add the methods you need from the list and fill in each type’s settings.
- Reference numbers are created automatically for profiles and charge targets. In general settings you can adjust the reference number base and the VAT rate shown when paying — change the reference base only with care if numbers are already in use.
When a participant has an open saldo, they start payment in Hob, confirm the amount (or pay the full balance), and choose an enabled payment method. A successful online payment is recorded as a transaction automatically.
Paytrail
What it is: Online payment through Paytrail. The payment page lists providers returned by Paytrail (for example Finnish online banks, cards, and MobilePay), depending on your merchant agreement with Paytrail.
When to use it: When you want one integration that covers most Finnish online payments from profiles. Make a separate agreement with Paytrail.
Setup:
- Obtain a Paytrail merchant account (merchant ID and secret key) from Paytrail.
- Add the Paytrail payment type under Payment types.
- Configure:
- Paytrail merchant ID
- Paytrail secret
- Adjust the title, display order, and Show info text (shown to the profile before paying) if needed.
Stripe
What it is: Card payment via Stripe’s hosted payment page (EUR). Useful for international profiles or when you prefer Stripe as the card acquirer.
When to use it: When your merchant account is with Stripe.
Setup:
- Create a Stripe account and obtain a Stripe API key (secret key) for Hob to create payment sessions.
- Add the Stripe payment type.
- Enter the Stripe API key in the payment type settings.
- The profile is redirected to Stripe and returns to Hob after a successful payment.
Bank transfer
What it is: The profile pays by bank transfer or SEPA QR code. Hob shows receiver name, account number, reference number, and optional barcode or QR code.
When to use it: When you want a traditional transfer option or when some profiles prefer paying in their bank app instead of an instant online payment. In practice this is a free option.
Setup:
- Add the Bank transfer payment type (code
bank). - Fill in required bank details:
- Bank account number (IBAN)
- Bank receiver name
- Bank BIC (needed for SEPA QR)
- Optional Enable Banking API key and openbanking.io credentials.json — to import incoming transfers automatically by reference number. Without these, you record the payment when the bank statement arrives or when you mark it manually.
- Use Show info for deadlines or other instructions.
ePassi
What it is: Employee benefit payment through ePassi’s web payment form.
When to use it: When the club is an ePassi partner and profiles pay with exercise or culture benefits.
Setup:
- Obtain ePassi site and MAC key from ePassi.
- Add the ePassi payment type.
- Configure:
- ePassi site
- ePassi MAC key
- The profile submits payment on ePassi’s form; Hob validates the response signature.
Edenred
What it is: A payment type for Edenred employee benefits. Hob does not include a dedicated Edenred web payment integration like ePassi; use it together with instructions shown to the profile.
Note: If you also have Paytrail enabled, Edenred can be used to pay the same way as a Mastercard credit card.
When to use it: When you accept Edenred and want consistent instructions in Hob (for example paying in the Edenred app or on site).
Setup:
- Add the Edenred payment type.
- Write clear steps in Show info for the profile.
- Mark Physical payment if the benefit is handled on site rather than through an online redirect.
- Record the payment as an admin transaction when it is received (similar to cash or other manual methods).
Cash
What it is: Cash paid in person. There is no online payment link; the profile may only see instruction text if you add it.
When to use it: When some fees are collected at a class, event, or office.
Setup:
- Add the Cash payment type.
- Enable Physical payment to mark it as in-person.
- Optionally add Show info (for example “Pay the instructor before class”).
- When the profile pays cash, an admin records a transaction on the profile’s ledger.
Instructions
What it is: A free-form payment type with your own instructions (for example invoice by email, MobilePay directly to the club’s number, or a local practice).
When to use it: When no built-in integration fits but you still want a single place in Hob to show payment steps.
Setup:
- Add the Instructions payment type (code
instructions). - Put all required details in Show info: payee, method, and reference.
- Record the payment manually once it is handled outside Hob’s payment flow.
Limits and ordering
- You can enable several payment types at once. Show order controls the order profiles see them in.
- A payment type can be restricted so it is not offered for certain charge targets (for example membership only, not a season fee). Configure exclusions on the payment type in the dashboard.
- The organiser is the merchant for profile payments; Hob is the technology platform. Contracts with payment providers (Paytrail, Stripe, and so on) are the organiser’s responsibility.
Practical tips
- Start with Paytrail if you want online banking and MobilePay through one integration.
- Still configure bank transfer IBAN, name, and BIC — some profiles prefer paying by reference.
- Test with a small amount on your own profile before opening a season.
- See also the member registry and module docs (for example weekly courses) where saldo and reference numbers tie into enrolments.
